A fun, energetic speaker for Jesus Christ!
Several years ago a friend of mine (Dani) got married on Long Island so I went with another friend, Kari, to the wedding. Oh my gosh! It was so much fun. After dinner a bunch of people started dancing and Kari and I were two of them. We were mostly just dancing in a big group with a couple of couples as well. We were having a crazy good time and laughing so hard. I even did a dancing and singing duet with one of the other guests. I’ve heard there is a video of it but haven’t had the courage to actually watch it.
We were having such a great time until someone asked me what I did. At the time I was a Director of Children’s Ministry so that is what I told them. It was like the music stopped. Everyone stopped dancing and having fun and looked at me and said things like, “I go to church.” The party was over. They simply couldn’t have fun with someone like me. They continued to ask my friend Dani about me long after the party so I know it isn’t that they began hating me. It is just that they thought of me in a new light and couldn’t just have fun now.
The other day I went to a wedding shower and when I was leaving a man (the men came back) said, “So now that she’s leaving we can say what we want.” It sounded like a joke, but I think he was told about me so he thought watching his words would be best.
When I first believed in Christ as my Savior a lot of people treated me differently and said that I had changed. It was true, but I was still the fun Susan they all knew and still enjoyed joking around, playing games and even dancing! But my focus had changed and I was on fire for the one who saved me.
When you are a believer in Christ, you are different. No, people don’t need to stop having fun around you but you are different. We are called to be different. “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things have passed away; behold, new things have come.” 2 Cor 5:17
We should not want to do all the same things we used to do before we became believers. Although I am the first to admit that there are times you can’t tell me from a non-believer because of my sin. I still do get tempted and don’t always resist. The difference is that I am not content to stay where I am and want to repent before God when I sin. Also, there are a lot of things that I simply am not interested in anymore. It isn’t that I am saying, “You are no fun God! I want to do these things!” I actually want to live differently.
And, the truth is, if someone doesn’t live differently after they become saved, they aren’t saved.
Does this mean we are better than the unsaved? No! We are fallible people too; it is just that we are forgiven and have a present and future with Christ. People will think we think we are better because we won’t do what they are doing. But, for me, I know I am not any better than anyone else.
Although I wish sometimes that people could just relax around me, I think I will just embrace that people see me differently. It is worth it because I wouldn’t give up this party with Christ for anything!
